Project Description:
The work proposed will use wild Arachis to develop tools and knowledge to facilitate breeding of improved peanut varieties (Arachis hypogea) with disease and pest resistances. These varieties would require lower agrochemical inputs, provide cost effective and environment-friendly disease management, safer working conditions in agriculture, and safer food. Firstly, wild Arachis species with resistance to fungi and root-knot nematodes will be identified. Then a genetic map with molecular markers will be developed, and orthologous genome regions of Arachis and the model legume Lotus japonicus identified using comparative genomics. The genetic map and the knowledge generated will aid the introgression of wild disease resistances into cultivated peanut by plant breeding and in furthering our understanding of plant resistance genes.
