Project Description:
Oilseed rape is a valuable cash crop for farmers and the fatty acid composition of the oil produced is ideal for human health and nutrition. There is great demand for the development of a wide range of new varieties specifically adapted to exploit land and environments unsuited to rapeseed production using current cultivars. The need for rigorous safely assessment procedures before the introduction of GM varieties is too expensive for farmers in Asia. We aim to develop and provide low cost tools to accelerate conventional breeding and to gain access to a broad range of Brassica germplasm. We will establish an SNP marker system and genetic map using a mapping population derived from a cross between representative European and Chinese varieties. The segregation of a range of quantitative traits will be analysed. The design of the markers will fully integrate ours with other cutting-edge plant genomics resources.
