Project Description:
The objective of the proposed research programme is to identify and characterize genes conferring resistance to the blast disease in Chinese rice varieties and to assess the pathogen diversity for its ability to attack resistant varieties (avirulence/virulence). Chinese traditional rice varieties have a large biodiversity and characterisation of this material will lead to the identification of new resistance genes. Three different methods will be used to characterize resistance genes. Avirulence genes will be cloned and sequenced and distribution of their alleles studied in the Chinese blast population. This knowledge will be of important value for breeders to introduce the appropriate resistance genes by classical methods or by marker assisted selection to obtain durable resistance. The programme results will be exploited through conventional breeding methods but might also be exploited through transgene utilization.
