Project Description:
This trans-European network sets out to exchange factual information, knowledge and know-how in the area of genetically modified organisms in plants (GMPs). The network involves the participation of experts with a complementary range of experiences from various regions of Europe and beyond. The network will establish a European knowledge-base open to interested parties for the purpose of discussing and communicating key issues of GMPs, such as the benefits and limitations of GMPs to our society, as well as scientific, industrial, media and public perspectives. Thus scientific, social, ethical and regulatory issues will be addressed. Description of the work The core expertise resides with the participants in the network; however extensive use will be made of consultation with wide spectrum of experts: scientists, media, lawyers, industry, government, environmentalist groups, publishers and internet experts. In an area where debate can be highly animated, a scientifically reasoned approach will be adopted whilst at the same time reflecting the diversity of views. The activities include The provision of internet based information dissemination and communication infrastructure; The provision of GMP information through various work papers and fact-sheets, both in printed and electronic formats; GMP workshops; The establishment of a database containing experts and groups related to GMP issues. Regular working papers and fact sheets will be published at six monthly intervals with internet access expected to come on-line within the first year. The expected users of the project will be the media, concerned groups (environmental associations, research institutes, decision-makers) and the public interested or active in GMP issues.
