Project Description:
The form of arsenic and selenium in food and environmental samples determine toxicity, bioavailability and economic value. The feasibility of producing certified reference materials for controlling speciation measurements of As in chicken, rice, fish and soil and Se in yeast and cereal will be investigated. Expert laboratories will grow or collect suitable samples, conduct preliminary analyses and forward them to a leading producer of CRMs. The freeze-dried, powdered materials will be subject to homogeneity and stability testing according to agreed protocols. Materials shown to be suitable will be subject to an interlaboratory comparison exercise involving at least 10 expert laboratories to prove suitability for CRMs production. The candidate materials have been selected in response to industrial and regulators needs as presented to an EU network.
